E46 bogging randomly under acceleration

Hi guys I've been trying to sort out my e46 and it's random little problems here and there, at first I was getting a sporadic idle so I replaced the maf, that fixed those issues, I found a broken vacuum hose so I replaced that, however every once in a while I will get really poor acceleration, engine bogging and massive engine shakes when I try to take of from a red light for example. This does not always stay there for long, and often fixed itself after about 5 minutes, then it's back to normal, no rhyme or reason. I know that on my car the plug that connects to the valve cover is broken, and electrical taped from the previous owner, would this be a cause? Not quite sure what this specific piece is called. Any help would be greatly appreciated
