My master key no longer locks/unlocks the doors but still starts the car. Tried replacing the battery but that was not the issue (old battery shows 3v). I believe the internals are messed up so I'm looking into getting a new master key (searching for cheapest place online if anyone knows of any).
My concern is my car might have had the DME replaced at some point. I say this because INPA shows a production date of 2004. My car is a 2001.

I've been reading that you must keep the DME and keys together.
Can anyone confirm if this is the case?
If so, do I need the number off the DME instead of using my VIN??
I'm afraid I will spend close to $200 on a new key and it will not work... just trying to find a way to make it all work without wasting money.
Any help is appreciated.
