My limp mode might have just stopped?

:hmm:

I drove to my work and back today (~45 minutes), and noticed something really odd. Anyone who remembers my previous threads can skip to the break, I'm just gonna quick recap. My transmission (GM automatic) in my 03/2003 325i has been periodically going into limp mode for months, but only in fifth gear. As such, I tried about 101 things to fix it, and am essentially at the point of rebuild. As such, I have just been driving around using 4th as my top gear instead of fifth.

Until today. I figured 'what the heck' and put my car in fifth gear for the entire drive to my work, which is about 30 miles, about a 45-50 minute drive, mostly highway. Didn't engage limp mode. BUT as soon as I first put it into fifth, there was this borderline ungodly squeaking/whirring noise. As in, I honestly thought there was a squirrel lodged somewhere that rotates. That lasted about 5 seconds, tops. Then it stopped, the car was as quiet as always. And no limp mode. I thought it might be a fluke, so I did it again on the way back. Made that same squirreling/squeak again, much shorter this time, maybe 1-2 sec, and didn't engage. I thought maybe the trans was just in a good mood today. So I drove around campus for an hour before my class, using fifth as much as possible, and no limp mode.

Madness. Time will tell if this is a fluke or not, but I'm hopeful. Any ideas on what this could be? My thought is that when I changed and flushed the trans fluid it took a little while of being engaged in fifth to fully lube up the Torque Converter? That squirreling noise might have been the lube getting in there to help it lock up? Any ideas? I know this isn't much to go on, but I figure more perspectives are better than just mine.

Thanks guys!
