Hi again. Seriously, i won't be offended if you cuss me out for posting so many threads, but they haven't been terribly popular and I keep coming across new ideas.
I think that my Torque Converter is having problems locking up and de-locking up while in fifth gear. My car goes into limp mode in fifth gear only, while already in gear (not while shifting). Codes are p0700 and p0735. 87k miles, 2003 325i. Changed fluid/filter recently, pan was very very clean, 0 metal shavings of any sort, and fluid was in reasonably good condition for having gone 87k miles. I recently began to notice my revs bouncing around 35-45 mph in fifth gear, which is, to my knowledge, about when the torque converter locks up. My limp mode is normally triggered in two situations (although not necessarily 100% of the time).
1) when I rev the engine in fifth gear (often happens when going up/down inclines)
2) when I am in fifth gear at very low speed (30/35mph or so. maybe a little higher)
I know I have no codes for TC failure. But I feel that if it's having lockup problems, and lockup only happens in fifth gear, and my limp mode only happens in fifth gear, then I may/may not be on to something. About the bouncing revs though. I always drive in steptronic mode. So I usually have an eye on my revs, and I noticed a few days ago that the revs were jumping about (~1-200 rpm) from 35-45 mph, but only in fifth gear. I was able to reproduce it today, so I'm officially including it into my differential diagnosis here. I have managed to drive my transmission a relatively far distance before, ~2 hours on I-95 here in Florida, which is really flat, and I held 80 mph with my foot in the same place for the whole trip. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but i think that'd make sense.
I'm really sorry for posting so often lately, and I know you gents aren't my personal mechanics. But the mechanics I've been to include an incompetent dealer (that admittedly made me catch up on replacing sensors), and a mechanic who said I needed a rebuild by just pulling the two codes I mentioned, without even dropping the pan or anything. He said the fill plug was stripped, which was completely untrue. Came off clean with a ratchet. Looked like it'd never been touched.
Any ideas anyone's got I appreciate a whole lot. For the folks who've popped in to lend me a hand along the way, I appreciate your help, patience, and thoughts.
