Okay so here is what happened.
Last Sunday I got around to replacing my idler pulley and my serpentine (and AC) belt. The car drove fine all week, the old belt was in really rough shape, and doing this procedure cured me of that startup and low RPM whining noise. All was well.
Last night was the first I drove on the highway at considerable speed. Thankfully, that's not where it snapped. Right near my house my battery light came on and my power steering was gone. Upon parking the car, I looked under the hood and the belt was sitting in there shredded and off the pulleys.
My question is, what ELSE could be the problem? What am I looking for? Here are my other notes:
I checked and rechecked with the diagram that I put the belt on correctly, and I've done this before.
I noticed that the tensioner seemed harder to move this time, as in it was harder to torque clockwise to get the belt off/on. The AC tensioner was easier and if I recall correctly, the last time I did belts they were about the same.
I'm leaning towards the mechanical (I assume that's what I have) going bad and possibly causing this? What else should I look for?
The water pump is new, under 10k btw.
Any help is appreciated in advance!
