My car is an E46 2001 330ci vert with 130,000 miles.
I've had a thorough search, and it seems there could be any number of issues. As such I thought I'd post what I've done so far to rectify this issue, and hopefully if I ever get it sorted can put down here what went wrong!
As background, once in perhaps every 10 starts the car cranks and there is no start. (Battery is new and good). If I continue to try immediately I get the same problem. If I remove the key and wait for a minute or two, it will usually start.
This symptom is present when I start the car 'quickly'. By this I mean I turn the key from 0 to engage the starter relatively rapidily (within a couple of seconds). If, however, I wait on position 2 for about 5 seconds, the car starts first time.
My initial thought was - after searching - fuel pump/fuel relay/fuel filter. These were replaced and did not rectify the issue.
After getting INPA and diagnosing further, I found EWS error 209 "code implausible". I resynced the EWS-DME with INPA (and have done so every now and again) and the problem still rears its head every now and again. I do not need to ever resync to get the car to start eventually, it never (touch wood) does it continually.
I replaced the intake camshaft sensor as this was causing some driving problems, and this made no difference to the EWS error. I considered the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) or the exhaust camshaft sensor as potential culprits too - but the EWS error makes me think it's not related, and I have no other symptoms of these sensors going bad. When the car cranks the rev counter moves appropriately (100-300rpm or so) even when it doesn't start with the EWS error.
The sporadic nature of the error is eluding me somewhat. I've checked fuses, and they all seem fine, and it would hardly be a problem that goes away again if a fuse blew!
It really isn't a big deal, as at worst it means I take 2 minutes to start the car (remove key, wait, do it slowly, start) but I'm worried it may degenerate or by symptomatic of something else.
I am now at the stage where I am looking for alternative causes; my thoughts are, as possibilities the following:
EWS Antenna Ring
Key (I only have one, unfortunately)
Ignition Switch (but seems unlikely as I always get crank)
Crankshaft position sensor
Camshaft exhaust position sensor
Ignition Relay (light green)
Main DME relay (sky blue colour)
EWS-DME replacement
As the problem is not a big deal, I'm going to tackle it from a low cost basis. This morning I received a new Antenna Ring and I shall fit that and drive it for a while until it happens again (if it does). Then I'll go with the relays and follow the same procedure.
If anyone has any thoughts, then please give me any of your ideas!
My other concern is from INPA I get a few interesting things when reading the EWS module and/or key. I'll post these up as I don't know what to make of them, and any input would be greatly appreciated with these.
