Hello. New here. Somewhat, been looking and reading for awhile as I have had several BMW's over the years. Searched the forums and found a lot of different transmission issues but not anything that was the same as what I have been having.
I have an 2003 BMW 325XI with automatic transmission issues. This first happened about two weeks ago. The transmission did not give any warning signs, just a little hiccup slip around 25 MPH, made it another block and half then would not move. No motion in Reverse or Drive. Can feel the transmission attempting to engage as moving the shifter from Park thru all the gears down to Drive but just will not move. Upon attempting to put the shifter back in Park from Reverse, there is a clicking noise. If the shifter moved quickly from Neutral to Park, there is no clicking noise.
Had to have the car towed home. Attempted to push the car in the garage and could not make it. Went to leave it in front of the garage at the top of the hill. Placed the shifter back in Park and the car still tried to roll down the hill. Was able to eventually winch the car into the garage.
Put the car on jack stands all the way around. Started the car and shifted through the gears. Went through both in Reverse and Drive. Rev'd the engine to engage the AWD system and get the front wheels moving. Everything seemed fairly normal. While applying the brakes on the jack stands, the front wheels would stop as they should, but the rear hesitated and the ABS and Traction Control would light up on the dash. Took a few pumps but the rear wheels would eventually stop.
After a bit of head scratching, decided to check the fluid and considered changing the filter. No one in town had the filter in stock. So drained the fluid and refilled with Dexron VI for the GM transmission. Topped off the fluid with the transmission/engine warm and running. Planned to run this through for a 100 miles or so to allow it all the fluid including the torque converter to mix and repeat the process including replacing the filter.
Put the car back on the ground, ran through Reverse and Drive a few times up and down a portion of the drive way. If not previously mentioned, I live on a hill so I did not want to get too far down and not be able to get the car back out of the road. Felt as though everything was "normal" again. Kept going further and further down the hill, and it didn't have any issues climbing back up. Then finally, no noise or anything, the transmission was back to a no movement condition and rolling in park.
Winched it back into the garage, and scratching my head again... What could be causing these issues?? Is it electronic or mechanical? Please help.
