Exhaust Emmision Values Light is illuminated.

Hi to you all. What is the most likely reason why the above light is illuminated on the dash panel.
Prior to driving back home at a steady 50/60mph with the newly acquired 320i 2.2 litre Touring Automatic (driven by my brother) the car had been test-driven and left for collection on the 1st June.
The car fired up perfectly OK and within a mile or so the light came on but after turning the ignition off to put fuel into the tank it came back on and has remained on.
The car runs smooth enough until tick-over in drive when it sounds as though it is hunting.
Putting the car into neutral/park results in a smoother tick-over but it is still there.
There is no coolant loss and the temperature gauge runs spot-on between the extremes, also the oil level is correct and was changed at the service just before I collected the car.

I cannot get the car to my chap that 'does' until Wednesday or Thursday for a diagnostic - your thoughts/knowledge would be very much appreciated.
