I'm a long time aircooled VW and 240 Volvo guy, and I just bought my second BMW, a 2001 manual Topaz Blue 330ci, which was slid into a tire wall at Laguna Seca a couple years ago by a friend of mine. So I got it reasonably cheap.
The body damage was minimal, mostly scratches. But the worst part is that he let the car sit with the windows cracked under a tarp for almost a year, so it got all crusty and moldy inside. He was also starting to make a spec car out of it, so he removed and sold some of the interior, including the headliner and sunroof assembly. A molded fiberglass panel is installed in place of the sunroof.
I'm an idiot, so I am making a daily driver out of it. I found a bunch of interior parts on Craigslist already, gave the rest of them a deep cleaning, and have started dressing up the scratches from the tire wall.
Sadly, my first drive to work resulted in the expansion tank splitting and all the coolant dumping out of the bottom. So I now have a cooling system refresh kit on the way, along with a PCV kit just for good measure. Fun!
For the 30 minutes that I've driven it, the car seems great! I'm looking forward to browsing this site for tips and tricks, and also for used parts.
