Hello all,
I am new to owning an E46, but I have owned many other BMW models including E30,E12,E28,E34, and E36.
What I need opinions on are the following:
I just purchased a 2003 325i with an overheat disaster. It is the M56 SULEV engine in this car. It has severe intermix which leads me to believe headgasket at very least, if not a cracked head, only way to tell is to separate head from block. First question: Can anyone recommend a machine shop in the SF Bay Area for this type of work?
Next, I know I will have to deal with possibly stripped threads in the block for the head bolts; does anyone have the head saving jig that I could borrow? Of course, I would pay you to rent it, of course I would send you a deposit first, of course I would buy new time serts; I'm just looking to avoid paying $400 + for a one time use tool. I would like to use either the Baum B115000 jig or the TimeSert 1090. Have any of you used either, both, which is better?
Last, I guess I'm looking for opinions as to if it is even worth it to attempt to rebuild this engine. Have any of you saved one of these before? Are there any nasty other surprises that I should be looking for? Should I just get a used engine, and if so, does anyone know where I can get one on the cheap?
Thanks for reading,
Sean
