Hey! It's me!

Hi All! Thanks for having this forum where people like me can learn a bit about our cars. I am joining this forum because my daughter has purchased a 1999 328i and she is a gas and go type person but having been run through the ringer with my personal 2000 LandRover Discovery II know that gas and go just is not enough! We drove 3.5 hours to pick up this little gem she calls Ginger and on the way home I pulled into a rest area and could not get the car in reverse! I laughed with great gusto as I pushed it out of the parking space to move forward and drive home. My daughter was terribly upset that her car was not "perfect" once I got it home and this made me laugh even harder! I knew we would have issues with an older used car but I also heard that these cars are very "friendly" with DIY repairs to some degree which is how I found the forum and why I decided to join you! I have some questions and I am not sure if this is where I should put them. I am not a mechanic (and up until recently the only tool I owned was a nail file) but after several years of run around over the LR I am getting a bit more friendly with cars and have tackled some LR repairs myself (how empowering!). Can someone direct me to the correct forum place to ask questions regarding why my Innova scanner won't read this BMW? How to determine if the dash light fuse is blown out or if in the past someone disabled all the warning lights I see are there but never light, even on initial key turn when starting? Oh, and here is a good one... how do you read that wonky dipstick? :) I found the post on No Reverse and GM transmissions and have ordered my parts for that adventure. Hopefully I can post a positive result in the near future! Ginger runs like a dream when she is moving, so I believe once we get some little quirks out of the way my daughter will be happy again. I am looking forward to getting to know ya'll through your posts and helpful advice and occasional ribbing of each other! Thanks for reading! Dawne
