Auto transmission louder than manual?

Just wondering . . .

I've had my '03 330i ZHP 6MT since late last year. We recently got the wife an '04 330i, AT, non-sport.

The car with the auto transmission seems to have more "under-hood" noise than my manual transmission. I know the AT has a belt driven radiator fan that could contribute to some of that but even when the engine is cold and the fan is barely turning the auto car is louder. And it's not a pleasant sound like the growl of the ZHP, more of an "wooshing" sound.

I'm guessing I'm hearing the fluid-flow noises in the torque converter.

Anyone else noticed this?
