Audio Unit Issues - Help Needed!

Hello All,

I've recently acquired a 2003 320 td Compact (53 plate), which has some audio gremlins. I knew of these at the time of purchasing, but took a gamble as the car was a good price! The head unit I have is the factory-fitted Sat Nav and TV unit.

There is a sound output from the front left speaker and tweeter, yet the three other speaker sets produce no output. After locating the Audi Unit with my dad, we set about testing the rest of the speakers by rigging up another old head unit we have to the battery and buzzing it across the corresponding pairs of speaker wires which feed into the Audio Unit. We've discerned that all the speakers are in perfect order, having heard music through them! So I guess it's either the Head Unit or the Audio Unit?

The question is, has anybody else had this issue? Is there anything I can do regarding the Audio Unit? I am aware Audio Units are very expensive - even second-hand ones. The only remaining part I have yet to strip out and have a look over is the head unit - has anyone had any issues with getting an output from the head unit?

I would actually be happy to ditch the Sat Nav TV Navigation screen and install my old after market single din stereo I had in a former car (it has bluetooth, iPod connector etc so I'd happily put it in) and wire the speakers through myself. The thing is, I can't find a double-din to single-din fascia anywhere for the E46 Compact. Has anyone found any products which would do the job, or have any other way round it?

Your help would be immensely appreciated!
