Hello, I have read most of the vibration threads and they are very helpful. In the winter I run steel BMW rims and 225/45 R17 Nokian Hakka's. I have a rear end vibration that can be heard, seen (head rest) and felt (seat). It becomes noticeable at 30 mph and continues all the way up. It coincides with the rotation of the wheels/drive shafts and sounds like a low frequency (say 200-300 hz) banging or knocking sound. I have replaced a few rims that had run-out or pothole flat spots. I also replaced a tire that had run-out or maybe a cut tread lug. Anyway I even put the spare tire on the rear to diagnose the issue. I have ordered a new set of Michelin pilot sport AS/3 tires and will put them on my summer rims next week to see if this fixes the issue.
I jacked the car up different ways and spun each of the tires to look for wheel/tire run-fout. The DSC system doesn't like this so I pulled the fuse/defeated it with some success. You sometimes have to go through 5 car restarts to get the DSC/Dash lights reset.
I don't hear the noise with a wheel up off the ground spinning. I am thinking about lifting all 4 wheels up of the ground, putting the front bumper against a wall, and using cruise control to run the car at 55 mph. I know this is dangerous and not recommended. I have a good stethoscope.
Any suggestions on other things to check ? (Giubo, CSB, main Drive shaft, frozen U joint, TC Mount, Rotors sticking, rear R/L half shaft). I want to rule out the obvious working from the tires "in" before I drop the muffler... Remember it's -10 F here and not much garage heat for me...
This noise is driving me crazy, it's not real loud but its always present (does not improve with cold temps). It seems to improve with a little snow cover which makes me think tire tread, bubbling or run out... but I'm swapped front a rear tires and put new tires an rims on the rear. I'm trying new summer tires and rims next as a test. Thanks, Don
