Catalytic Converter Issues

Hello E46Fanatics, I'm new to the Forums.

I recently purchased a 2003 BMW 330i that I knew had a few problems. The big one was, it wouldn't pass Smog. I took it to BMW and had them run a series of tests. These are the codes that it returned:

0000E9 - DME: Catalytic-converter efficiency, bank 1

0000E1 - DME: Trimming, oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter, bank 1

0000EB - DME: Trimming, oxygen sensor before catalytic converter, bank 1

0000EE - DME: Misfire, cylinder 1

0000F1 - DME: Misfire, cylinder 4

00001E - IHKA: AUC heating

0000F5 - KOMBI: No CAN identification (ASC)

000011 - KOMBI: Thermal oil-level sensor

000021 - LSZ2: Headl. v.a.c., front load sensor, open circ.

000022 - LSZ2: Headl. v.a.c., front load sensor, short-circuit to ground

000007 - GM: Signal STDWA (only relevant if an anti-theft alarm is fitted)

000042 - GM: Burglar-al. system; pass.-compart. sensor

000043 - GM: Burglar-al. syst: pass.-compart. sens. rear

000029 - GM: Relay for central locking, unlocking

00002A - GM: Relay for central locking, double locking

00003D - GM: Trunk-lid unlocking: mechanism

000020 - GM: General module V: internal fault processor

000088 - GM: DWA alarm memory: hood

005E19 - ABS-DSC: CAN data fault from DME/DDE (DSC lamp on as long as error is present)

005DA3 - ABS-DSC: Wheel speed sensor, front right

005D93 - ABS-DSC: Wheel speed sensor, front left

This is word for word from the their invoice:

125942 ISTA-D SHOWSE1 & EB = PRE AND POST AT O2 SENSORS BANK 1, AND DME CODE E9 = CATALYTIC CONVERTER, RAN TEST MODULES ON FAULTS, PER TEST THE PRE O2 SENSOR IS CURRENTLY WORKING OK BUT ENGINE IS RUNNING LEAN. SMOKE TESTED INTAKE TRACK AND FOUND ENGINE BREATHER VALVE LEAKING. PER TEST MODULE THE THE BANK 1 CAT CONVERTER EFFICIENCY IS POOR AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. RECOMMEND REPLACING THE ENGINE BREATHER VALVE AND ALL HOSES, ALL 4 OXYGEN SENSORS DUE TO MILEAGE AND BANK 1 AND 2 AT CONVERTERS (BANK 2 DUE TO MILEAGE). ALSO RECOMMEND REPROGRAMMING DME TO LATEST VERSION.

The O2 Sensors are brand new, it's the guy who installed them didn't do something with the computer. But they have less than 5,000 miles on them. I found a Engine Breather Kit on eBay for about $90 which I'm good on, (I'm studying Automotive Technologies and wanted a car I knew would break.) Due to the lovely California Emission Laws I actually have to spend quite a bit on new Cats, I'm only getting Bank 1 (Unless I get Bank 2 at a dirt cheap price) Since BMW said I needed new O2 Sensors as well, even though I don't, I'm just going to assume they wanted as much money as possible.

My main point is, I can't find a single DIY on removing/replacing BMW Cats for my model! Just DIYs on simple models where the cat is below the car, on my model it's on the left of the engine tucked away. (Right from the engines POV)

Other problems that I'm aware of, Transmission has hesitation going from Garage Gear to any other gear only when it's on a cold start, (Instructor said I should check the fluid, I did, it was topped off, but black.) (I checked it with the Engine running and unscrewed the Filler and it poured out a little.) He said it's possible that the Solenoids are getting sticky from the oldish fluid. (126K Miles and never had a Transmission Flush.)

The Passenger Side Xenon Light fails to ignite quite often, BMW could not duplicate this error so they didn't bother with it. Planning on changing out the entire housing and installing Angel Eyes.

I'd like to know how to replace the Cats, (I don't want to take it to a professional, I don't have much invested in the car and really want to learn it myself, I have access to a well equipped shop, minus whatever I need to tell the computer I replaced a part.)

I'd like to know what the DME is and how much it is to upgrade/reprogram it.

I'd like your opinions if I should flush the transmission and take the risk of totally ruining it or keep the old fluid in and wait for it to die.

I'd like to know, if replacing the Cats would be worth it, or in those codes there is something else that could ruin the cats faster, like the Breather Valve making the Engine run Lean.

Thanks in advance for any and all help I'm given.

Headlight Problems!

Hey guys i looked through a few other threads but found no answers.

i own a 99' 323i sedan & about a week ago i (dont know how) lost/broke my driver side indicator corner. by broke i mean the plastic cover has come off, but i wasnt really worried about this because it was all still working sweet. now yesterday i jumped in my car & the little orange car icon on my dash was shown along with the driver side low beam signal. so sure enough i tried my low beams & the driver side is gone. note that high beams still work & parkers still work. tried switching bulbs but did not change anything. there was a little rain a few days before this broke but i dont recall driving during it & found it strange the other lights still function. is this just coincidence ?? anyone else had this problem ?? thanks :)

E46 Convertible Brushed aluminum trim for convertible

Up for sale is a full set of convertible brushed aluminum trim. This set comes with the plastic pieces for all of the door armrests. I don't want to risk breaking the trim so I will leave them on. It comes with 8 Pieces in total !!

The trim is in great shape for the most part with the exception of visible wear on the drivers side trim. This is the area of our cars that take the most beating so some wear and tear is about to happen. Also the trim on the driver side rear has a few fine scratches.

Clips: all of the clips are intact with the exception of the piece above the dash area. Its missing one prong all the way to the right. You can use the prong off of your old trim or just mount without it. I had it mounted without it and it didn't make the trim stick out. It mounts 100% perfect.

Tischer sells these things brand new for $1,110 plus shipping.

My price: $350 shipped/paypal included. Each piece will be wrapped and packed up neatly. May consider trade for your old wood trim (doesn't matter the condition as long as its not cracked). Coupe sets usually sell for $300-$450 and we all know these are hard to find for the convertible.

S54 Transmission options???

Hey guys,

New member here, nice to meet everyone. I am just getting into a not so typical custom s54 swap into a classic. I did a test fit of an s54/getrag 6spd out of a z4m, and I feel that the positioning of the engine is a tad bit too low, however, the transmission from the z4m is a little too fat (too much height/girth) in the transmission tunnel to allow me to lift the entire setup about an inch. It's also a bit longer than I'd like. The area around the bell housing has plenty of clearance for adjustment, but down the tunnel where the tunnels thin out near the shifter, it doesn't have much room to play with so I can't really raise the engine much unless I hack up the transmission tunnel.

I've read a million posts and looked at a million pictures trying to see what transmissions might be smaller/shorter but it's hard to tell. I'd like to stay 6spd if possible, but will go 5spd if necessary.

Do any of the experts out there have a suggestion for a transmission that is strong enough to be mated to the S54, but smaller than the one BMW chose? The vehicle will not be tracked and the s54 will mainly remain stock except for headers. I'm not looking for a debate on which transmission is better quality, this is more of a logistical issue.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

E46 M3 FS: ACS Type 2 3-Piece 18x10/11.5

Freshly rebuilt back in July, and only ran for <2 months.

2x Brand new polished rear lips

4x Brand new black powder coated barrels

2x Refinished polished front lips

Faces are freshly painted white with a hint of gold flake. Brand new gold bolts, and unmounted custom center caps.

All barrels, 2 rear lips and custom ACS center caps were purchased directly from Paul from EWheelWorks.

The only bad is one of the front lips has a very minor groove, which cannot be noticed, and the rear lip has a hair curb mark in the lip which I sanded and polished. Again, you cannot notice. The faces are damn near perfect, with the exception of very minor paint flaws which cannot be seen until examined very closely. I only had a roll on my rear fenders of my M3 to make these fit, fully dropped on BC BR Coils.

Occupancy seat emulator installed, but light came back

I got my emulator for the occupancy seat sensor. Cleared the code with my PA soft software, but 2 days later the airbag light came back on. The code was for the occupancy sensor. Will the seat belt tensioner be bypassed with the emulator or just the sensor itself? The light comes on and goes off. sometimes it will stay off for a couple days.

Sahara Beige Metallic 330i

Just wanted to use this thread to keep a log of changes to my car from day 1. Can't say I've seen a lot of Sahara 330's out there, so hopefully I can make mine stand out from the group!

my starting platform

and my first "simple" modification...

Torque Wrench

I really want to buy one so when I do all the work on the Bimmer I don't over torque anything which usually causes more issues then not. I am proned to thinking tighter is better but I know that's not the case.

Anybody have any good ideas on torque wrenches without paying over lets say $75.00 dollars? I would need one to dial down to about 5 if possible.

Lean Codes Fixed

My car would get the occasional cold rough start and SES with P0171 & P0174 during cruise only after some time (though increasingly frequent). Also, the heat was getting cold at idle, so the thermostat was going. Car has 139,000 miles.

This is not a DYI, just some observations.

The fuel pump died last fall, I already had a new one and the relay, popped it in in 30 minutes, occasional rough cold starts fixed.

I decided to tackle a bunch of things while I was under the hood. None of these had been done before except for the Belts & Tensioners, as the hydraulic tensioner failed at 65,000 miles.

Pre-Cat O2 sensors

Cooling System Refresh

Belts, Tensioners & Pulleys

Fuel Filter

Intake Boots

DISA Rebuild (GAS upgrade)

Clean ICV

Pre-Cat O2 sensors were easy, make sure you get a proper socket, the only thing that required any thought was getting the wires back in the clips (this is a recurring theme, I have large hands).

Cooling System Refresh, also very straight forward. I use Dow DC-4 to lube all of the O-Rings before assembly, makes everything slide together nicely. The radiator drain screw was brittle and snapped, so I had to order a new one, no big deal. I don't see why people struggle so much with filling and bleeding the system. It's just not that difficult. I used the ECS kit, it came with everything. I inspected the radiator and it looks fine, so no reason to replace it.

Having done the Belts, Pulleys and Tensioners before, I knew the only pain was getting the serpentine belt back on. I still don't see a way to get the tensioner pulled back by using the bolt to torque the tensioner, without stripping the stupid Torx bolt. I used a motorcycle tire iron to lever the tensioner, not ideal, but still works. What you really need is a helper, which I didn't have.

Fuel Filter was a slight pain, but I see no need to pull fuses, empty the fuel tank or clamp lines. I relieved the fuel pressure at the Schraeder valve on the fuel rail, had a quart plastic bowl handy and basically only drained what the filter held with a slow dribble from the line to the fuel tank. Get new hose clamps for the lines, the stupid BMW ones can be loosened but not tightened. I didn't have new ones, so I figured out a way to tighten them anyway.

Intake Boots, what a pain in the ass. The lower boot clamps are positioned so you can't access the screws. I resorted to cutting the boot off with a utility knife and still had to curse at the screws to get them off. What is irritating is that it was quite easy to position the clamps to put the screws where they could be accessed, so I have no idea why BMW puts them where they do. Both boots had multiple holes in the inner radius of where they bend, I was quite surprised they were such bad shape.

DISA valve was slight dirty, but 100% intact and operating correctly, I already had the GAS kit so I put it on. The GAS kit is very well made, so I don't see any reason to pull the DISA again.

The ICV was just a little dirty, but operating correctly, I cleaned it up and put it back in.

I inspected all of the vacuum lines and they were fine.

Everything buttoned back up, moment of truth, started right up. I cleared the codes. went on a short drive, let it cool off, topped up the coolant, went for a longer drive, let it cool again. topped up about 2 more ounces of coolant. At this point only the EVAP readiness monitor was not ready, so I went for the emission inspection. Passed no problem. On the way home, the EVAP readiness cleared too. No more codes so far, so I'm sure the intake boots were most of the problem, though I suspect the O2 sensors were getting lazy too.

I also did an oil service and changed the aFe conical filter and cabin filter while I was in there.

Now the bad news. The car was running fine before and runs the same now. No increased performance or improvement in efficiency. Not that I expected any. I was averaging 28.3 MPG before and the car was still accelerating like it always did before the work. But it's nice to see that SES light out.

What did the paint shop do to my wagon?

My 2001 325i touring in for paint repairs to rear bumper and tail gate including new handle this week, picked it up today and now the check engine light is on, and also drive away locking is back-which I had turned off 3 yrs ago at the dealer as I found it to be a pain.

What did they do?

They've had the tail gate off and also replaced the rear handle-its like the car has gone back to factory settings?

They're sending it do the dealer tomorrow to get it checked out

when to check your Vanos

How do u know when u should check your Vanos? I have a 2004 M3 with 81k miles on it.

Trade our E46 touring for a new Jetta TDI Sportwagen?

I had an interesting idea...sell our '03 325 touring for a new or 2010+ Jetta TDI Sportwagen. Our touring has 108k miles and has had most of the usual issues sorted out but will eventually need a new alternator but runs and shifts fine. It is also our doggie transport vehicle. One reason for considering a swap is the new 2015's will require the urea additive where the pre 2015 TDI Golfs and Jettas do not. Obviously there are trade offs but probably keeping the BMW would probably make more sense. Comments or thoughts?

Pump to Rack Hose Bushing

While working on my header installation, I noticed that my pump to rack hose (the loop that's parallel to the rack) was hanging down freely. The rubber bushing apparently broke in half. Does anyone know what the point of the bushing is? It doesn't appear to be serviceable on its own, and the hose itself isn't leaking, so I don't want replace it unless it's truly necessary. I'm thinking about just suspending it with a zip tie.

Boston Area - BMW Diagnostic Scan tool

A week or so ago I replaced my leaky valve-cover gasket with a brand new one. During the valve-gasket replacement I left the intake manifold intact, just removing the airbox / MAF for extra working room.

About 2 days after the gasket job was done my 'Service Engine Soon' indicator came on; and a quick stop at Autozone yielded two codes; P0171, P0174 (Bank 1, Bank 2 are too lean).

I've since double checked the grounding wires on the valve cover, removed & sprayed the MAF with CRC MAF cleaner, ensured the silicone intake boot is tightly connected around the MAF, and even ran a bottle of Techron fuel injector cleaner thru the tank. Last fall I did disassemble the intake manifold; cleaning out the IAC, and examined the DISA valve (prior owner had replaced it) - the DISA valve looked used, but the rubber/plastic flap held vacuum & wasn't torn or broken in any way. After doing all of this I used a regular OBD2 tool to clear the codes; the codes reappeared within 75-100 miles. Despite the error codes; the car does not feel underpowered, and otherwise drives and idles as it should.

So this brings me to the subject line of this thread; does anyone in the Boston area have a BMW specific scan tool? From my research these two codes (P0171, P0174) - can be caused by an array of issues; fuel system, spark plugs, intake system etc... Bottom line, my gut is telling me these codes are somehow related to the work I performed; however the car does have 201,000 miles - so random failures are possible.

If someone in the Boston area w/ a BMW diagnostic tool (not an obd2 tool..), that is capable of reading the current/historical results of electrical component tests that would really help me out, so I can start ruling out components.

Thanks!

325ci 5E3C and 5E38 Fault Codes

Hi Everyone

I am after some help on a fault that i am having with my uncles car.

The car is a 2001 325ci with low mileage (around 50,000 miles), on a trip down from London to Cornwall he reported that the traction control light and ABS light flashing followed by a thumping noise. He pulled over and had a look and then drove on for it long happen again 100 yards further on. He continued his journey.

On his arrival i plugged in my diagnostic computer and it brought up 2 fault codes in the ABS/DSC, these were:

5E3C: Rotation Rate Signal

5E38: Rotation Sensor

I cleared these fault codes and took the car for a spin, the car was only driven about 10 meters are less than 10mph and the traction control light flashed followed by the ABS pump firing off for around 3 seconds. I re-scanned the car and the fault code 5E38 re-appeared.

I then went into the live data and found that the YAW sensor (rotation sensor) was reading at -14 degrees when the car is sitting on the flat. when driving the YAW would move to -45 degrees!! on a right hand turn but will only move to +4 degrees on a sharp left hand bend.

From this i have sort of concluded that the fault is with the Rotation (Yaw) sensor, however whilst monitoring the live data whilst the car was being driven i also noticed that the Lateral acceleration sensor which measurement is given in G force never moved at all on the road with harsh acceleration and braking.

Does anyone agree with my diagnosis of the YAW sensor and also does anyone think that there is a problem with the lateral acceleration sensor?

I have never worked on a BMW before as i am a HGV mechanic by trade and was after a bit of input before i go spending his money!!!

Thanks Everyone

Michael

Hello from Atlanta

Recently purchased my first BMW. 2001 325Ci Convertible with 100k miles. Black on tan. Got a great deal on it and have thoroughly enjoyed working on it. So far I have replaced the final stage resister, outside air temp sensor, roundel on the hood, LED license plate lights, drivers door lock and purchased a new key from the dealer (ouch). The more I drive it, the more I love it. Next are shocks and wheels/tires upgrades.

2002 M3 worse oil change ever

I'm not sure why I was so bone headed on my oil change, but I appear to have used both washers on the oil filter bolt instead of one on the filter bolt and one on the drain plug. I came out of my office to find an engine covered in oil and one hell of a headache. Long story short, I removed/replaced the washer on the oil filter cap, cleaned up as best as I could (got to love the smell of burning oil!) topped off my oil, got home to do the drain plug washer and found that I must have stripped the bolt because instead of a nice 6mm hex, it was just a round circle. So I've got two questions here:

1) Do you really need that washer (I'm guessing yes, but praying no)?

2) I've never used an easy out before, anything in particular I should know about them before I attempt to use it?

Where to get wheels re-drilled

I'm looking at a set of wheels, and I can get them cheap, but I would need to have them re-drilled to 5x120. I know its a bit extreme, but if I can get them at a moderate price, I don't mind the re-drill cost. So the real question is, does anyone know of a shop that is capable of re-drilling wheels?? They are Work wheels so I want to make sure its done correctly. I'd prefer somewhere in NY, but I can travel a bit to get it done.

I also realize I can use adapters, I have no experience with them, so I can't speak how solid the are in terms of practicality. Maybe someone on here can speak to it, I know rcsummers ran adapters when he did the Porsche turbo twists, so its not completely out of the question. Thanks in advance.

E46 Coupe FS: OEM ZHP Coupe Springs

OEM ZHP Springs out of a 330Ci Convertible. Perfect condition. No Cracks. No rust. Possible shipping. $275 OBO plus shipping

E46 Coupe Pre-facelift TiAg OEM Parts + CSL v1 splitter for free/best offer

Hey guys.

I was cleaning out my garage and came across some old OEM parts I had left laying around from my old car. The parts are all OEM and came off of a 2001 tiag coupe (pre-facelift). From what I recall, these are the parts in the box:

OEM Parts:

-Both halogen headlights

-Both rear tail lights (amber not clear or LED)

-Front grills with TiAg trim

-OEM hood/trunk emblems with no flaking

Only non OEM part is:

-CSL V1 splitter (a little beat up on the bottom but should still look okay mounted) I believe it is the driver side but I would have to double check.

I'm trying to make room in my garage and instead of throwing these away, I figured someone would appreciate these parts. Therefore I am offering them for free (or whatever you would like to offer in exchange, beer is pretty cool :P). I'm located in the southwest suburbs just outside of Chicago and conveniently off of 294 and 55. I will not part out piece by piece, so if you want only one thing you have to take it all. If you decide to give the parts you don't need away after or throw them out that is your call.

I don't check these forum often anymore so if you are interested, just e-mail me at konradbafia (@) gmail

I'm not really willing to go through the hassle of shipping but I guess if you throw me an entertaining offer that makes it worth it, then I'd consider it. Otherwise, local pick up in Chicagoland area only.

Thanks!

Essential NIGHT PHOTOS photography tips needed for non-photographers WITHOUT a DSLR!

BEFORE/AFTER PHOTO!:

Hello everyone,

My last two photoshoots were RUINED because I didn't know how to take a night photo. One at the beach which would have been awesome, and another at the HOLLYWOOD sign in LA tonight, which would have been really, really awesome. If I had known what you'll learn in this post, I could have taken GREAT shots - and I would not have thought to visit the photography forum on here, so this thread should not be moved to the photography thread.

Here are tips for making the perfect NIGHT photos in the dark. It doesn't matter if there are NO LIGHTS as long as you can actually see something with your eyes, then the camera can too and take EXCELLENT photos!

It's actually very easy. In 5 steps you can go from terrible photos that you think your camera just sucks (when really it doesn't), to amazing night photos that make people think you must be a professional.

Step 1: Get a tripod. When it comes to night photos, tripod is more essential than ever. You simply can't take GREAT night photos without a tripod. You will without a doubt end up with blurry or grainy photos.

Step 2: Put your camera in Manual mode . Don't use auto mode. You need Manual mode to change the next settings.

Step 3: Change to the lowest ISO . If you can turn it off, then do. If not, then put it to 100 which is probably the lowest on your camera. This will eliminate the graininess, which is the worst part about night photos.

Step 4: Put it to the LONGEST EXPOSURE (SHUTTER SPEED) POSSIBLE . On my Canon camera, the setting to do this was changing the shutter speed to 15 seconds, which I really had to search through the features to find it. There was a section called "long shutter speed" which once I chose it I could change the shutter speed from 1 second up to 15 seconds. This made the final biggest difference and eliminated underexposure.

Step 5: Use the Self-Timer feature so that just pressing the capture button doesn't shake the camera. This one might not be necessary, but if you have a REALLY long shutter speed set, or if you have ULTRA HIGH RESOLUTION, then you might want to do this to eliminate camera shake by merely pressing shutter button. I didn't use this with ISO 100 and shutter speed of 15 seconds, and the photo turned out perfect.

IN SHORT:

Tripod, Manual Mode, ISO 100, Shutter Speed 15 seconds, Self-Timer

These five steps will give you the perfect night photos of your car!

Post your pics here if you followed these tips!

p.s. if your camera really, really sucks (like some $5 throw away camera), then there might not be any hope for you. Plus, if your camera sucks that bad, you won't even have these settings to change.

EXAMPLES (both photos taken using tripod):

(NOTE: Click images for full size image to see full effect and maximum resolution!)

BEFORE: USING AUTO MODE (normal shutter speed, normal ISO (prob 1600))

FIX ATTEMPT: CONCLUSION: IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX - EVEN WITH MY SKILLS. (LOWER LIGHT IS MUCH WORSE!!)

AFTER: USING THE TIPS I GAVE YOU ABOVE WITH EXACT SAME POSITION PHOTO IN EXACT SAME LIGHTING CONDITION (taken just a few seconds later after adjusting the settings):

Note: Another tip is to use white balance so it's not all yellow looking like above, but I don't know enough about that so I just used Photoshop to fix the color. You can fix color of a good photo in photoshop, but even with my advanced photoshop skills, the bad night photos like the first picture cannot be salvaged. But for this picture, I will show you how to fix the color in Photoshop (CS6):

Image > Adjustments > Photo Filter

Photo Filter settings: Cooling Filter (80), Density: 59%

FINAL PHOTO: CONCLUSION: AWESOME!! I don't need a better camera after all!! :)

GOOD LUCK! HAPPY NIGHT SHOOTING!!! :) :) :)

NEED: Xenon Headlights, auto-leveling clip

I broke the clip that the auto-leveling motor clips into as I was dismantling my xenon headlights to get to the bowls. One of the retention tabs broke away from the clip and it fell out of the bulb holding assembly (the chromed piece the halogen high beam is molded into and the xenon projector screws into).

PM me if you have one laying around in need of a good home. :)

Maximum PSI Stage 2 Turbo Build | SMGII | BW 3.5" Race | Zima Motorsports

To my knowledge, this is one of the very few documented Max PSI turbo builds. I know there are quite a few kits out there, but no one has publicly posted anything about their results, testimonials, or reviews (good or bad); which seems odd to me. However, this is the first supercharged to turbo build documented on the forums!!! :parrot:

As you all know, SMG guys have been plagued with issues when surpassing 500lbs torque or so; i.e. car shutting off when decelerating, hesitation in between shifts at wide open throttle, and rough idle. All of which are unacceptable. These were the key factors that had me wait MONTHS before I pulled the trigger. The moment I heard the great news that Nick G from Technique Tuning had solved the puzzling issue, I called up Mike at Max PSI and officially made the purchase! :thumbsup2: -With a few tweaks of course. I opted for the PT6466 Turbo over the 6266, a 3.5" electronically controlled dump valve, and a 3.5" intake.

I will start off by saying that Mike's customer service has been nothing but Grade A! He responded to all of my annoying e-mails (70 total back and forth) prior to me even purchasing a kit from him. Also, even after the purchase he was always a phone call away to offer tips on how to install a part or to verify if a device is running properly; even when he was 'off the clock.' That says something because let's face it, most issues ironically occur after business hours, which sets you back a day (basically) because you have to wait until the next morning to get an answer. :hattip:

Before I went turbo, I had an Active Autowerke Stage 2+ Renegade kit utilizing the Rotrex C38-91 blower (I'll be posting this for sale soon); I was making good power, ~520rwhp. I had a special set of pulleys made by AA so that I can run more boost, but I never got around to install them. Right when I was about to, a forum member (FrankensteinM3) was tackling nearly the same build with the same size pulleys. He was hitting 20-21psi and making nearly ~600rwhp!!! BUT, like I said earlier, at the time there was no SMG fix so he was plagued with all the issues mentioned above. This is where the debate came; do I want to build my motor and over-rev the blower to hit 600rwhp or do I want to keep my block stock and turbo it so my power potential/upgradability is endless? I went turbo because, let's face it, they are the future and DAT TORQUE FIGURE DOE?!?!?

THE KIT HAS ARRIVED!!!:

-The packaging was precisely tapered off into squares separating all of the 'little' parts. Each part was labeled so you knew exactly what you were looking at and each wire was labeled to limit any confusion as to where each goes; i.e. brown goes to black, or blue goes to white. I thought I was going to receive a typical box of parts and would have to separate each piece before tackling the install. The install instructions came pre-loaded onto a flash drive and some of the parts had their own sheet of directions taped to them. I will say that the directions do need some revisions/updating, but overall they were clear.

-As described above in my opening statements, I opted for the PT6466 turbo over the 6266, a 3.5" electronically controlled dump valve, and an upgraded intake to 3.5". You will see more of these later as the install progresses.

SUPERCHARGER KIT NEEDS TO COME OFF:

MANIFOLD, HEADERS, SUPERCHARGER, INTERCOOLERS, & FUEL RAIL REMOVED:

-This is the 'easy' part of the build since taking parts off is always much easier than putting them on. This can be done within an hour or so if you are mechanically inclined.

3/30/2014

When we pulled the old spark plugs out, we noticed that they were blackened due to running rich. Because of that we were advised to replace the valve cover gasket since we were in there already. The inside of the motor looked super healthy and sludge-free, though. I guess I can thank oil changes at 5k intervals. Woot Woot!

3/31/2014

The Max PSI Stage 2 kit utilizes the OEM fuel system, which I do not have since I have the 'upgraded' AA stage 2 fuel system utilizing -6AN lines and fittings. Rather than opening up a can of headaches, Mike said it was okay for me to keep the fuel lines intact. This will be a benefit later on for when he releases the E85 tune. I also opted to 'upgrade' to the Radium Engineering Fuel Rail and re-route the fuel lines to the back of the fuel rail in order to make room for the fuel pressure gauge on the front of the fuel rail. This is truly a beautiful piece! Also, took the time to install the 60# fuel injectors; they popped right in!

This kit comes with a Walbro 485 fuel pump that sits in the tank. We had to remove the Aeromotive 340LPH fuel pump and drop this one in. Since my fuel pump housing is already wired with relays (thanks to AA fuel system), this took no time at all.

We also took the liberty of installing the thick intercooler since it is literally the easiest thing to install. I noticed that I will need to locate a new kevlar bumper support since my old one had to be cut in order to fit the AA intercooler.

Also, we test fitted the Max PSI manifold and realized it sits a lot 'deeper' than the AA manifold, which causes an issue with the fuel pressure regulator location since it is bolted right under the throttle bodies. We decided to reroute the FPR into the 'drug bin' since it's an open location that is easy to get to.

INSTALLED THE INTERCOOLER:

REMOVED THE AA FUEL RAIL AND INSTALLED THE RADIUM ENGINEERING FUEL RAIL:

RELOCATED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR INTO DRUG BIN:

DROPPED IN THE WALBRO FUEL PUMP:

4/1/2014

Today we took the liberty of installing the new engine mount with associated bracket, exhaust manifold, turbo housing, PT466 Turbo, downpipe, Tial Wastegate, and associated boost lines. We also took the time to test-fit the section one piping since it will need cutting in order to fit the Bimmerworld single 3.5" race exhaust I have. The section 1 from Max PSI splits into 2 as if it were bolting up to an OEM-like system, but the BW 3.5" Race exhaust is a single pipe all the way to the muffler. With this kit, you will have to tap into the oil pan for the oil feed lines to the turbo. I forgot to snap pictures of this, so check back later for updates.

NOTE: I had the Vibratechnic motor mounts installed prior to this, and you CAN keep the driver's side one in place if you don't want to revert back to stock. This won't cause any fitment issues for any of the associated turbo parts.

The turbo and turbo housing were an absolute NIGHTMARE to install because of the super tight location the turbo sits in; I wish we could run top mounted turbos, but without all the fabricating. Mike supplies this custom fabricated wrench (you'll thank him later) to help with installing the turbo, but there is one allen wrench type fitting facing the motor at the top of the turbo housing that is an absolute nightmare to get to. This is where you start to look like all these girls on Instagram taking selfies in the mirror with their backs arched in awkward positions and their hands in locations that don't make sense.

4/2/2014

Now that the FPR is out of the way, we took the liberty of installing the manifold (with new MAF), intercooler piping, 3.5" intake with filter, SMG tank, deleted the OEM windshield washer fluid tank and used the universal tank that comes with this kit in the 'drug bin', Synapse Engineering Diverter Valve, and associated vacuum lines.

These parts were extremely easy to install since they are literally "bolt on." For this particular kit, the intake goes through the motor mount (super tight fit) and sits right behind the brake duct (if you're running an OEM bumper). Because of that, you will have to take out your OEM windshield washer tank and use the universal one that comes with the kit; it will be installed in the 'drug bin'. On the HPF kits, the intake goes up the side of the manifold/motor and sits where the secondary air pump is located, which allows you to keep your OEM windshield washer tank. At first, I opted for the HPF route since Mike is more than capable of custom fabricating any pieces you want, but he talked me out of it. It just didn't make sense to run a 2.5" intake right next to the motor (super hot), which basically means the turbo is sucking from a straw. With the intake at the bottom by the air duct, you are free to use 3.5" piping and a bigger intake filter right where there is an extreme amount of airflow. I still kind of want to go the HPF intake route, but I'll explain that in a bit.

Since this kit is using an OEM DME tune, the blowoff valve sits on the driver's side intercooler piping. On other kits using AEM Infinity or Pro-EFI the blowoff valve sits on the manifold, but I was told that isn't possible due to the OEM DME being used. Something about the blowoff valve being after the MAF and the DME not liking that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Back to the intercooler piping install I mentioned above. The driver's side piping goes straight up to the manifold, simple. The passenger's side piping goes straight to the bottom of the turbo, simple. However, this pipe sits EXTREMELY low. So low that you have to cut a piece out of the tray that sits under the motor. This is not for the stanced-out guys or the guys tucking wheels. This is why I mentioned the HPF intake location. If the intake goes straight up off the turbo into the engine bay, you could run this intercooler pipe through the motor mount allowing you to lower the car without any worries; you also won't have to cut the undertray. I am still considering this route, but at this point I want to get the car up and running first.

If you are going from a supercharger kit to a turbo kit, you will need to source some OEM 6-rib pulleys and tensioners. For a lot of supercharged guys, you were required to change everything to an 8-rib setup. You will for sure need an OEM water pump pulley, crank pulley, and alternator pulley. Since you're in there, you might as well get new tensioners too. The alternator was the hardest to source. Every dealer in the country, even Germany, is on backorder for this part. I got lucky and found a local guy to source this part for me.

MANIFOLD IS ON WITH THE MAF AND SMG TANK:

INTERCOOLER PIPING IS ON WITH SYNAPSE BOV:

INTAKE IS ON WITH THAT 'SUPER LOW' INTERCOOLER PIPE I MENTIONED:

See how the intercooler piping goes 'under' everything? Probably the only thing I don't like about this kit, which I might have to change.
