Testing Wires with a Multimeter

I am currently working on retrofitting an auto dimming mirror, which requires tapping into a 12v switched wire and a 12v reverse wire. I will also be installing a remote start in the near future, which will require more extensive wiring.

I do not know how to use a multimeter to test my wires. First thing first, can a regular multimeter like this be used, or do I need something like a clamp current?

Second, assuming a regular multimeter is fine, what do I set it to? I believe I was trying to test for the 12v switched wire in my headliner (near the sunroof motor) on the 20v setting.

Third, what should I ground it to? The edge of the DC outlet? Or somewhere metal?

If anyone can answer these questions or give me a rundown on testing these wires, I would be much obliged. I've exhausted my search options, and I feel silly.
