Potential buyer needs your expert advice!

Hey guys, new member here. I've owned one BMW in my life: an old E30 about 20 years ago that turned into a nightmare because I discovered the odometer had been rolled back before I bought it. Fortunately a lot of detective work and a served summons to small claims court resolved the issue and got the car towed out of my life, but it did scare me away from used cars ever since.

That said...I'm looking at early 2000s E46 Xi as a daily driver. Gotta be the Xi because I live in Utah and I need capability in the snow. Looking to downgrade (price-wise) from my VW Sportwagen TDI so I can sink the extra $$$ into a new Durango R/T for the family hauler (coming from an '04 Pilot). I drove the E46 on the track way back at its intro in '99 and of course have loved the car ever since, despite never having been in the situation of buying one.

Long history out of the way, what do I need to beware of with these cars? Am I walking into a potential financial quagmire? I love the on-road experience of BMWs but do not want to get into a lot of "off road" time (and cost) if you know what I mean. What should I be checking service records for? At what mileages do the expensive service intervals appear, and by "expensive," how expensive are we talking?

Looking forward to being part of the community (hopefully).
