engine problem condition critical

i was driving to work today and my oil light came on. a 2000 323i. i was then hearing a bit of a noise whenever i would shift gears. a louder noise like i would need a new muffler. when i got home from work today the car completely shut off right before my driveway. i started the car and the whole car started to vibrate because of the engine. then seconds later it would shut off. finally got the car in the driveway and i opened the cap to add oil as the oil light was on and it must have been extremely hot in there as fumes were coming up. anyways the whole engine rattles when running and does anyone have any suggestions before i take it to the stealership tomorrow? i really have no clue where to start looking in this forum. thanks.
