I changed my plugs and cleaned my ICV and throttle body today.
I took the ICV all the way out and cleaned it, with the throttle body I just propped it open and sprayed some TB cleaner inside
Once I got it all back together, it was idling fine at about ~850 in park, ~700 in drive. After driving a couple minutes, when I put it in park, the idle went up to ~1200 ish and stayed there. Wasn't rough at all, but a steady ~1200. When I came back half an hour or so later, I started the car again and it was back down to 850, but stayed at 1200 when I got home. I thought my throttle body might be sticking, so I hooked up my scanner and checked the throttle position. It was in Torque so I'm not sure exactly what sensor it was measuring, or if it was the correct one, but it was registering 0% when the pedal was up, and correctly read it higher as I pushed the throttle pedal down.
But I pushed it down to the kickdown point quickly a few times, and my throttle cable popped off of the throttle body. As far as I know, I didn't touch the adjustment knob, but in trying to get the ICV loose I may have moved it a little bit. I couldn't see how to get the cable out of the bracket, and when I was fidgeting with it, it popped off of the throttle body. The ball on the end was intact, so when I put it back together it went in fine.
I opened the hood and put it back in place, but it still felt loose. I adjusted the adjuster nearly to the end of the adjustment range, and then it seemed to stay in place in the throttle body spring. I pumped the gas pedal quickly, and it didn't come loose. If i moved the throttle body by hand, by turning the spring instead of pulling the cable, the cable almost instantly popped off.
So I have two issues here:
1) It seems like I shouldn't have had to put it all the way to the bottom of the adjuster for it to sit correctly. Is that right, or is it acceptable to have it down that far?
2) I'm worried to drive it now because I don't want the cable to pop off. Is it normal for the end of the cable to come off if I move the spring by hand? I pushed and pulled on the ball on the end of the cable, with it in place in the throttle body, and it didn't come loose. but as soon as I opened the throttle, it fell out. Can't the throttle body be opened by the motor? In which case wouldn't the cable fall right out? Or does the spring section not move when the motor operates the throttle?
The only other thing I can think of is that the throttle cable wasn't clipped in place under the cabin filter...I can't seem to find a picture of it, but there's a little clip that clips into the plastic wall on the other side of the brake fluid reservoir. It wasn't attached there and I couldn't get it to clip back in place.
When I scanned it again, it was 0% when the pedal was up, and after pushing it down a few milimeters it started to open; it got to 92% with the pedal all the way down, and 99.5% at kickdown. Those numbers are correct as far as I can tell, but I'm not sure about the cable itself.
