e46 330xi thermostat hot but no red light

So this morning here in STL it was below 0 degrees, I go out to start my car in the morning to warm it up like I usually do and then come back to it like 20 or so minutes later. On my way to work I'm at a light and notice my temp gauge is all the way hot, but the red light overheating indicator wasn't on, the needle was just all the way to the right.

Back in the summer I had to have the radiator expansion tank reservoir replaced. The thing was cracked and my car would overheat, but when it did the red light indicator on the thermostat gauge would come on when the needle went all the way to the right. The dealership fixed everything and have not seen a problem since.

Any ideas? Could it be the brutally cold weather? It's the first time its been sub zero. Why wouldn't the red light come on? I'm concerned because I don't want to drive the car if the thing is really overheating.
