Hi, Y'all.
I just got my first BMW about a month ago. It's a 2002 330 ci vert. In talking with my friends, who like me are in their late 40's, I have noticed a trend and wonder if it applies to any of you members.
I used to approach car ownership purely from a utilitarian, aka "cheap" perspective. I just wanted four wheels and a seat, and some assurance that it would last for a decade. I bought respectable, but not flashy cars, some from Europe, others from Japan. The plan was to find the car that most perfectly fit my needs, then to drive it into the ground and repeat.
Well, I guess my outlook has changed. I traded my perfectly functional Suzuki SX4 for this silver beauty. There was no logical or practical reason to do this. I just wanted to.
Now my friends are also starting to think about this process, and that it is possible to have a car "just because" and to choose one based upon the smile factor.
So, here's the question: With really good cars like the E46 accessible to regular guys like me, not for hooning or modding or ricing out, but just for driving around with a big dopey grin on my face, is there another type of owner emerging? Is there a "third way" of being a BMW guy? Or am I just now noticing something that has been around forever?
Thank you, and I'll take the answer off the air...
