Volvo 240 engine care advice

All, anyone have experience with Volvo 240 B230 engines? I have a '93 wagon and it's overheating. I replaced the temp sender and the thermostat. Does not seem to be losing any coolant. Gauge goes up into the red spontaneously, then falls back down into the meridian buffer zone. Happens whether moving or sitting in traffic, with A/C on or off. No rhyme or reason. Open the hood when its in the red zone and I don't feel any more radiant heat than what is normal operating temperature. No steam, no leaks of any kind, no oil loss, no oil in coolant or vice versa.

Coolant is old and tired, I will admit. Reservoir has silt in the bottom.

This is my beater and I'd kinda like to keep it going since it has never failed to start and run. The most reliable car I have ever seen. I hate driving and riding in it.

Need ideas. Thanks. Yes I know coolant replacement is in the works. Might replace the radiator and water pump as well. I don't know how prone to failure they are vis a vis a BMW. This car is a rock. Too bad I hate driving it but whatever.
