Considering E46 M3

Hi Guys,

I've read a bit through your forums and read through the thread about considering purchasing an E46, but I came here to ask what everyday drivers thought about their M3 and maybe what they would do differently. Currently I drive an SLK32 AMG. It's about 3300 lbs and 360hp/tq, which is rated a bit higher than the M3, but I admit, I really liked driving the E46 when I tried it out.

The reality with any German automobile is that the motor and the tranny are usually great, the driving experience is fun, but the electronic demons are a real bummer. I do a bit of DIY and overall I've loved my AMG, but I've been looking at a few really low mileage M3s and am considering making a move. My main concerns:

- Many low mileage specimens are actually in the 2002 - 2004 range and I'd prefer the 2006, hoping that any major issues were resolved in the last model year. Where in the model cycle do the major issues get resolved?

- Anything in particular that I should avoid?

- What major maintenance should I expect?

Overall with my AMG I've replaced the rear tail-lights, the motor mounts, a transmission plug, the drive shaft bushing, the crankshaft position sensor, the drive belt and a few other odds and ends, brakes and regular maintenance of course. Overall it hasn't been too bad.

I'd appreciate any input y'all have.

Cheers!

Martin
