I've been looking to buy my first BMW. Specifically a E46 Sedan with an automatic transmission. (I'd prefer manual, but need automatic so my wife can drive it too) I don't have much experience working on cars, but I was thinking this would be a good time to get my hands dirty with some of the more basic maintenance, while taking it to shops for anything out of my skillset. So that's where I'm coming from, now onto the specific car in question:
I've been looking at a 2004 330i ZHP with 75k miles. It seems pretty well kept up, and serviced regularly at the dealer. I had a pre-purchase inspection done on it and found out a few things. For the most part it's in great shape but the oil filter housing is leaking a bit, it could use transmission service soon, and no lights were on but it had some codes in the computer. The codes are:
DIGITAL MOTOR ELECTRONICS (DME)
- 2742 Misfire, cynlinder 1
- 2745 Misfire, cynlinder 6
- 2742 Misfire at several cylinders
CENTRAL BODY ELECTRONICS (ZKE)
- 6C LIN bus: no response, driver's mirror
- 3D Drive for rear lid unlocking
- 74 Spray nozzle heater, left: open circuit
- 07 Burglar alarm system, STDWA signal
- 76 Spray nozzle heater, right: open circuit
LIGHT SWITCHING CENTRE (LSZ)
- Hvac section, control unit fault
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (KOM)
- 0245 No CAN identification (ASC)
- 0249 No CAN identification (ASC)
- 0215 Tank lever type sensor 2
HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING (IHK)
- AUC heating
PARK DISTANCE CONTROL (PDC)
- 0013 13 Converter, rear centre right
The cylinder misfires are what seem to be the most concerning. Those codes were from 100miles ago and haven't happened since. The car is a daily driver which means they fired within the last couple weeks. Maybe it was a fluke, or maybe it was a sign of things to come. The spark plugs were replaced at the beginning of the year, so it's probably not those. The shop said that the ignition coils could need replacing, but they said it could also be something more serious. One thing they mentioned is that BMW's recommended oil change interval isn't quite as frequent as they think it should be and that it's possible that oil has built up which would be expensive. The current owner told me he changed the oil ever 15k miles (which carfax confirms), so it sounds like that is a possibility.
My question for all of you is whether you think this is a large cause for concern and what you think a price on this vehicle should be. Thanks!
