I searched around a bit and couldn't find any posts from the past couple years documenting this failure. It looks like the seal can harden over time and some anal retentive chefs routinely replace them in case their car will suffer that 1 in 10 failure throwing an easily reset check engine light. I broke mine in a different way.
Actually, it was the fuel jockey at the last gas station I visited since NJ does not allow self serve. The gorilla trapped the broken lanyard under the cap throwing an evap check engine light. I tried to remove the cap to cut off the remaining lanyard and reseat the cap but it was stuck. The ape overtorqued it and broke the click mechanism and/or plastic cap retention feature. I had to use my 16 inch slip joint pliers to remove the cap. The plastic top cap broke off but I was able to grab enough the the metal underneath the spin off what was left.
Anyway, the old cap was 16116756772. The new cap is 16117222391 and costs less that $20 at Tischer.
