325it 5speed/ZSP: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blew

I'm back. After two long years outside the Cult of the Roundel, I'm the proud owner of a new-to-me 2002 325iT, optioned as Buddha intended with a 5 speed and the sports package.

Bought it from a fellow fanatic, endured a 250-mile drive in a rental Chevy Sonic, then luxuriated in the 250-mile return trip from the Maryland shore to the New Jersey suburbs.

I had forgotten how great these cars are and this one seems to be an especially nice one. As you may recall, I had an Alpine White 2005 iT also with a clutch and sports package. It feels like coming home, especially since I swapped in the ZHP shift knob.

The PPI showed only a few very minor things: a loose tie rod and a rattling exhaust hanger. I'm the third owner. The first owner picked it up on European Delivery and kept a thoroughly anal mileage log. Even the Pilot sports seem to be in good shape.

The mechanic said the cooling system is good for another 300,000 miles! (just kidding.) I'm going to work through the PM, starting with those small items, the battery, and the cooling system (including the Stewart water pump and maybe the electric fan upgrade.) The control arm bushings could use some attention and I'll probably slap on some Konis while I'm at it.

Love the black leatherette sports seats, but I'd like heated sports seats with lumbar even more so I'm on the prowl for those, as well as an M3 steering wheel and maybe an exhaust.

Oh, the something Borrowed part? I start hearing NPR repeating itself so I begin pushing buttons. The PO had left a CD in the deck: Monster Hits of the 1980s.

Madness! Wang Chung! Dexy's Midnight Runners! Where are my parachute pants? I gotta burn that one before I send it back.
